If you’ve been told you need to “triple feed,” and your first thought was “I can barely keep up with one baby feed—what is this?”… you are not alone.
Triple feeding is one of the most exhausting feeding plans new parents can be given.
And if you’re in it right now, I want to start with this:
You are not doing anything wrong. This is just a really hard season.
Let’s walk through it together, like a doula sitting beside you at 2 a.m. with a warm cup of coffee and zero judgment.
What Is Triple Feeding?
Triple feeding is a short-term feeding plan often recommended when a baby is having trouble breastfeeding effectively, gaining weight, or transferring milk well.
It involves three steps—hence the name:
- Breastfeeding your baby
- Pumping breast milk
- Bottle feeding expressed milk (or supplementing if needed)
Then… you repeat the cycle every 2–3 hours.
Yes. Even at night.
Yes. Around the clock.
Yes. It is as intense as it sounds.
Why Would a Mom Be Told to Triple Feed?
Triple feeding is usually recommended when there are concerns such as:
- Baby is not transferring enough milk at the breast
- Low milk supply concerns
- Excessive newborn weight loss
- Prematurity or NICU discharge feeding plans
- Latch difficulties
- Jaundice requiring increased intake
- Rebuilding breastfeeding after separation
It is often used as a temporary “bridge plan” to help baby gain weight while protecting and building milk supply.
What Triple Feeding Actually Feels Like
Let’s be honest for a second.
Triple feeding can feel like:
- Feeding a baby every 2–3 hours
- Pumping immediately after
- Washing pump parts constantly
- Bottle feeding while your baby is still hungry
- Never really sleeping between feeds
- Feeling like feeding is your entire identity
Many moms describe it as:
“By the time I finish one feeding cycle, it’s time to start again.”
If that’s you—you’re not exaggerating.
It really is that demanding.
The Emotional Weight of Triple Feeding
Triple feeding doesn’t just take time.
It takes a toll emotionally too.
You might feel:
- Overwhelmed
- Touched out
- Anxious about supply
- Guilty no matter what you choose
- Confused about whether it’s working
- Exhausted beyond words
And here’s something I really need you to hear:
Your worth as a mother is not measured in ounces pumped or minutes spent on a pump.
How Long Does Triple Feeding Last?
Most lactation professionals recommend triple feeding as a short-term strategy, not a long-term lifestyle.
For many families, it may last days to a few weeks depending on:
- Baby’s weight gain
- Milk supply progress
- Latch improvement
- Feeding efficiency
If you are months into triple feeding without support or reassessment, it may be time to ask for a plan review.
You deserve a feeding plan that is sustainable.
Tips to Survive Triple Feeding (Without Losing Yourself)
This is where I put on my doula hat and say: we are going into survival mode, not perfection mode.
1. Lower the Bar Everywhere Else
Housework? Minimum.
Meals? Simple.
Laundry? It will still be there later.
Your only job right now is feeding and healing.
2. Batch Pump Parts Like Your Life Depends on It
Because honestly… it might feel like it does.
Have multiple sets if possible, or rinse and refrigerate between uses (ask your provider what’s appropriate for your situation).
3. Set Up a “Feeding Station”
Keep everything within arm’s reach:
- Water
- Snacks
- Charger
- Pump
- Bottles
- Burp cloths
You should not have to stand up if you don’t have to.
4. Sleep in Shifts If You Can
Even a 2–3 hour uninterrupted block can help your body recover.
5. Ask for Help Early, Not Late
If someone offers help, let them:
- Wash bottles
- Hold baby after feeds
- Bring food
- Sit with you so you’re not alone
You are not meant to do this in isolation.
When Triple Feeding Needs Extra Support
Please reach out to a lactation consultant or provider if:
- You feel physically or emotionally overwhelmed
- Your supply is not improving
- Baby is not gaining weight as expected
- Feeding feels painful or unsustainable
- You are running on empty
Sometimes triple feeding is necessary.
But it should never feel like you are drowning alone in it.
From One Mama to Another
If you are triple feeding right now, I want you to hear this clearly:
You are not failing.
You are not behind.
You are not doing it wrong.
You are in one of the hardest feeding seasons a new mom can experience, and you are still showing up for your baby every single time.
That matters more than you know.
And this season will not last forever—even though it feels like it might right now.
You are doing enough.
Even here.
Even now.
Even tired.
You are doing enough.
