First Trimester Survival Guide: Doula Edition

Published on October 9, 2026 at 3:35 PM

So...

You peed on a stick.

Now you're crying because your husband breathed too loudly, your favorite coffee smells like hot garbage, and somehow you're exhausted after folding one towel.

Welcome to the first trimester.

If no one has told you this yet...

You're doing better than you think.

The first trimester is all about survival. Forget trying to be Pinterest-perfect. Right now, we're just getting through one day at a time—and that's enough.

As your doula bestie, here are some of my favorite survival hacks.

Doula Hack #1: Buy the Stretchy Pants

Listen.

Your uterus is still tucked safely behind your pubic bone, so you may not have a "baby bump" yet...

But the bloating?

She's showing up early.

This is not the season to squeeze into jeans that leave button marks on your stomach.

Buy the leggings.

Wear the biker shorts.

Rock the stretchy waistband.

No one is handing out awards for uncomfortable pants.

Doula Hack #2: Eat Like a Toddler If You Have To

You know those beautifully balanced pregnancy meals you saved on Pinterest?

Forget them.

If all you can stomach today is applesauce, macaroni and cheese, toast, watermelon, mashed potatoes, or chicken nuggets...

Eat it.

Your goal right now isn't perfection.

Your goal is getting calories in and keeping them there.

Healthy pregnancies aren't built on one perfect meal.

They're built over months.

Give yourself grace.

Doula Hack #3: Morning Sickness Doesn't Read the Clock

Whoever named it "morning sickness" clearly had an easy pregnancy.

It can show up:

Before breakfast.

After lunch.

At bedtime.

Or all day long.

A few things that may help:

• Keep crackers beside your bed.

• Eat before your feet hit the floor.

• Snack every couple of hours.

• Cold foods often smell less offensive.

• Ginger, peppermint, or lemon may help.

• Sip fluids instead of chugging them.

Your body gets to make the rules right now.

We're just trying to work with it.

Doula PSA: Know When It's More Than Morning Sickness

This one is important.

Morning sickness is common.

Being unable to function because you're constantly vomiting is not.

Please call your healthcare provider if you're:

• Unable to keep food or fluids down.

• Vomiting several times a day.

• Losing weight.

• Feeling dizzy or faint.

• Barely urinating or your urine is very dark.

These can be signs of Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG)—a severe pregnancy condition that often requires medical treatment.

You deserve support.

You deserve medication if you need it.

You do not get extra points for suffering.

Doula Hack #4: If Water Suddenly Tastes Weird... You're Not Crazy

One day water is refreshing.

The next day it tastes like pennies.

Pregnancy is weird.

Try:

• Lemon water

• Popsicles

• Ice chips

• Electrolyte drinks

• Frozen fruit

• Coconut water

Hydration doesn't have to come from a plain glass of water.

Every sip counts.

Doula Hack #5: Let's Talk About Pooping (Because Nobody Else Will)

Thanks to pregnancy hormones, your digestive system has decided to move at the speed of a snail.

Welcome to pregnancy constipation.

Before you panic...

Know that it's incredibly common.

Drink water.

Walk if you can.

Eat fiber when your stomach allows it.

And don't be afraid to ask your provider about safe options if things aren't moving.

Trust me.

They answer questions about poop every single day.

Doula Hack #6: Google Will Have You Planning Your Funeral by Tuesday

Every cramp isn't an emergency.

Every symptom isn't a disaster.

And every Reddit thread isn't written by a medical professional.

Instead...

Start a note in your phone.

Every time you think of a question, write it down.

Bring that list to your prenatal appointment.

Or ask your doula.

You'll get much better answers than Google can give you.

Doula Hack #7: Build Yourself a "Pregnancy Survival Kit"

Throw these into a small pouch or bag and keep it with you.

✔ Crackers

✔ Ginger chews

✔ Electrolyte packets

✔ Hair ties

✔ Lip balm

✔ Tissues

✔ Gum

✔ Vomit bags

✔ Alcohol prep pads

Speaking of alcohol prep pads...

Here's a little doula trick.

Some moms find that smelling an alcohol prep pad during a sudden wave of nausea helps settle their stomach long enough to get through it.

It's inexpensive, easy to carry, and worth trying.

Doula Hack #8: Stop Apologizing for Needing a Nap

Your body is growing a baby.

Building a placenta.

Increasing your blood volume.

Changing nearly every system in your body.

Of course you're tired.

The laundry can wait.

The dishes can wait.

Rest is productive.

Doula Hack #9: You Don't Have to Do Pregnancy Alone

One of the biggest myths about doulas is that we only show up once labor starts.

The truth?

Pregnancy is when many mothers need support the most.

Questions.

Fears.

Birth planning.

Finding resources.

Knowing what's normal.

Having someone remind you that you're not crazy when water suddenly tastes terrible.

That's what we're here for.

Learn more about what a doula actually does throughout pregnancy.

Final Thoughts

If there's one thing I hope you take away from this guide, it's this:

The first trimester isn't about having everything figured out.

It's about surviving one day at a time.

Some days you'll eat a beautiful, balanced meal.

Some days you'll celebrate because you managed half a bagel and kept it down.

Both count.

Be kind to yourself.

Accept the help.

Take the nap.

Wear the stretchy pants.

And remember...

You don't have to navigate pregnancy alone.

Your doula is cheering you on every step of the way. 💛
